Once upon a time a mouse, a bird, and a sausage formed a partnership. They kept house together, and for a long time they lived in peace and prosperity, acquiring many possessions. The bird's task was to fly into the forest every day to fetch wood. The mouse carried water, made the fire, and set the table. The sausage did the cooking.
Una volta un topino, un uccellino e una salsiccia si erano associati e governavano insieme la casa. Vissero a lungo felici e in buon'armonia facendo prosperare il loro patrimonio. Compito dell'uccellino era di volare ogni giorno nella foresta e di procurare legna. Il topino doveva portare acqua, accendere il fuoco, preparare il tavolo, mentre la salsiccia doveva cucinare.
Whoever is too well off always wants to try something different! Thus one day the bird chanced to meet another bird, who boasted to him of his own situation. This bird criticized him for working so hard while the other two enjoyed themselves at home. For after the mouse had made the fire and carried the water, she could sit in the parlor and rest until it was time for her to set the table. The sausage had only to stay by the pot watching the food cook. When mealtime approached, she would slither through the porridge or the vegetables, and thus everything was greased and salted and ready to eat. The bird would bring his load of wood home. They would eat their meal, and then sleep soundly until the next morning. It was a great life.
Chi sta troppo bene, ha sempre voglia di qualcosa di nuovo! Così un giorno l'uccellino incontrò per via un altro uccello con il quale si vantò della sua felice condizione. Ma l'altro lo trattò da povero babbeo che faceva i lavori pesanti, mentre gli altri due a casa si davano buon tempo: il sorcio, una volta acceso il fuoco e portata l'acqua, andava a riposarsi nella sua cameretta finché‚ gli ordinavano di preparare la tavola; la salsiccia stava ai fornelli, badava che il cibo cuocesse bene e, verso l'ora di pranzo, si rotolava due o tre volte nel purè o nella verdura, e il cibo era bell'e pronto, condito e salato. Quando l'uccellino rincasava e deponeva il suo fardello, si mettevano a tavola e, dopo aver cenato, dormivano a pancia piena fino al mattino: una vita splendida.
The next day, because of his friend's advice, the bird refused to go to the forest, saying that he had been their servant long enough. He was no longer going to be a fool for them. Everyone should try a different task for a change. The mouse and the sausage argued against this, but the bird was the master, and he insisted that they give it a try. The sausage was to fetch wood, the mouse became the cook, and the bird was to carry water.
Il giorno dopo l'uccellino, istigato, non volle più andare a procurare la legna, dicendo che aveva fatto il servo abbastanza e quasi era stato il loro buffone: si doveva cambiare per una volta e provare in altro modo. E, per quanto il sorcio e la salsiccia lo supplicassero, l'uccello ebbe la meglio: si doveva cambiare e tirarono a sorte: alla salsiccia toccò andare a prendere la legna, il sorcio diventò cuoco e l'uccello doveva portare l'acqua.
And what was the result? The sausage trudged off toward the forest; the bird made the fire; and the mouse put on the pot and waited for the sausage to return with wood for the next day. However, the sausage stayed out so long that the other two feared that something bad had happened. The bird flew off to see if he could find her. A short distance away he came upon a dog that had seized the sausage as free booty and was making off with her. The bird complained bitterly to the dog about this brazen abduction, but he claimed that he had discovered forged letters on the sausage, and that she would thus have to forfeit her life to him.
E che cosa avvenne? La salsiccetta se ne andò a far legna, l'uccellino accese il fuoco, il sorcio preparò la pentola, e aspettavano soltanto che la salsiccetta tornasse con la legna per il giorno dopo. Ma questa tardava tanto che gli altri due si impensierirono e l'uccellino le volò incontro per un tratto. Ma, poco lontano, ecco venire per la strada un cane che, trovata nella povera salsiccetta una facile preda, l'aveva afferrata e uccisa. L'uccellino protestò con veemenza per palese rapina, ma invano: il cane disse infatti di aver sorpreso la salsiccia con dei documenti falsi e, per questo, essa aveva dovuto pagare con la vita.
Filled with sorrow, the bird carried the wood home himself and told the mouse what he had seen and heard. They were very sad, but were determined to stay together and make the best of it. The bird set the table while the mouse prepared the food. She jumped into the pot, as the sausage had always done, in order to slither and weave in and about the vegetables and grease them, but before she reached the middle, her hair and skin were scalded off, and she perished.
L'uccellino raccolse tristemente la legna e, a casa, raccontò ciò che aveva visto e udito. Erano molto afflitti, ma convennero di fare del loro meglio e di rimanere insieme. Perciò l'uccellino preparò la tavola e il sorcio il pranzo, ma al momento di servirlo volle, come già la salsiccetta, rotolarsi e guizzare tra la verdura per condirla; ma non c'era ancora in mezzo che s'impigliò e ci lasciò la pelle, il pelo e anche la vita.
When the bird wanted to eat, no cook was there. Beside himself, he threw the wood this way and that, called out, looked everywhere, but no cook was to be found. Because of his carelessness, the scattered wood caught fire, and the entire house was soon aflame. The bird rushed to fetch water, but the bucket fell into the well, carrying him with it, and he drowned.
Quando l'uccellino venne per mettere in tavola, il cuoco non c'era più. Costernato, l'uccellino buttò all'aria la legna, chiamò e cercò ma non pot‚ più trovarlo. Per inavvertenza la legna prese fuoco e scoppiò un incendio; l'uccellino corse a prendere acqua, ma il secchio gli cadde nel pozzo ed egli cadde con il secchio, cosicché‚ non riuscì più a venire a galla e affogò.
